Keyboards vs Digital Pianos vs Acoustic Pianos – Which is Best for Home Practice?
Some frequently asked questions that we receive are, “Do I need a piano at home in order to get started in lessons?” “What kind of piano should I buy?” “What are the differences between a keyboard and digital piano?” In order to maximize the progress of the student and ensure the most efficient use of each lesson, all students should have access to some type of keyboard instrument at home in order to practice outside of the regular lessons. While an acoustic piano is certainly always optimal should space and funds permit, digital instruments have come a long way in terms of tone, touch, and the overall playing experience. Digital instruments can cost as little as $100 and as much as several thousand dollars. Most times an excellent digital piano can be purchased for the same price as an old/poorly conditioned acoustic. Today the line is blurred even further with “hybrid” instruments by Yamaha and Kawai that feature the complete hammer actions of acoustics (with wooden keys) but strike sensors that trigger samples of each through complex built in speaker systems. Indeed, there are so many options available, but we ultimately recommend that you try them all out to see what fits your budget and will bring joy and motivation to the student so that practicing is an inspiring part of the day! Here are all of your choices to consider sorted by pricing (lowest-highest).
Keyboards ($-$$)
Keyboards are the most affordable, entry level instruments. They are usually lightweight, portable and have two built in speakers. Keyboards that students should consider are those with 61-88 full sized, touch sensitive keys (avoid any “micro keyboards”). Most keyboards in this class feature unweighted actions meaning that the keys are easy to press across the whole instrument (unlike an acoustic piano which features a graded hammer action). Many keyboards also come with a variety of extra sounds and fun features such as “auto accompany,” “auto chords” and built in demos that make playing fun. The quality of the samples (sounds) are usually bottom of the line to the trained ear, but these instruments are more than adequate for the beginner and kids always love playing them.
Stage Pianos ($$-$$$)
More expensive keyboards are known in the industry as “stage pianos” and typically do not have speakers built in as they are built to be as light as possible with the highest quality for professional gigging musicians. They don’t need the speakers since they will plug into external amplification or stage sound systems. Students purchasing a stage piano should also budget for high quality headphones, a pair of monitors, or a keyboard amp. Most stage pianos will have better samples and actions than entry level keyboards. Stage pianos are usually built with 73-88 keys exclusively with semi-weighted and fully weighted actions. Since stage pianos are built for professional use, they typically don’t come with fun background accompaniments or many “extras” like keyboards do.
Used Acoustic Pianos ($-$$$$)
Let’s say you have a budget of $100. A keyboard is probably going to be a better investment since a $100 acoustic piano is usually going to have a lot of issues and will usually cost you several hundred dollars just to move it! Used pianos can be the biggest bargain or biggest mistake! There are great deals to be found, but when buying used, it’s vital to have the instrument properly inspected by a Registered Piano Technician especially in our area where many instruments have suffered from flood damage. When buying used, we almost always recommend Japanese manufactured models made by Yamaha and Kawai since they last for decades. You can purchase restored or refurbished models from these brands and have them pass as brand new many times! Whenever purchasing a used acoustic piano, we always recommend having a “Registered Piano Technician” check it out and evaluate it. A great resource for determining a piano’s value and how much you should pay is the “Piano Buyer” by Larry Fine.
Digital Pianos ($$-$$$$)
Digital pianos are similar in quality to most stage pianos and almost always feature 88 key graded hammer actions (to varying degrees). Some actions are heavier than others, so students should try out different models to see which feel the most comfortable under their fingers keeping in mind that their tastes may change as their strength grows with lessons. Some models, like Kawai and Yamaha’s upper level hybrids, have complete acoustic actions and wooden keys in them. The more they closely resemble an acoustic piano, the higher the price. Digital pianos often look nicer in the home since they come with a variety of furniture cabinets that simulate the look of a real piano.
New Acoustic Pianos ($$$-$$$$$)
A new acoustic instrument can last a lifetime when maintained properly, and there’s nothing like that brand new piano smell right? That smell comes at a premium though! Most new entry level acoustics start at 2-3k or more and frankly, there is usually nothing special about the sound or playing experience. A digital instrument is usually a better buy in our perhaps somewhat biased opinion. Once you get to 5-7k, the quality upright choices increase significantly. When considering form factor (uprights vs. grand pianos) keep in mind that a professional upright piano that is 52″ tall will have nearly the same string length and output of a small baby grand and take up a lot less floor space. Also keep in mind that new stock at your dealer may already be a year or two old since pianos take a while to sell these days. 8 Ways Music Lessons Can Improve Students’ Lives
Music lessons have so many hidden benefits for students of all ages that many people don't realize. Going to a music academy gives students a new way to make the rest of their lives better as well by building important life skills. Music lessons aren't just about learning how to play an instrument, read music or sing. Music lessons also enhance the quality of life of every student in the following eight ways:
There are no shortcuts in music. Even a prodigy has to learn how to play a new piece of music. Playing music requires focus. Unlike so many other modern things, there's no such thing as multi-tasking while practicing music. The coordination between a student's brain, fingers and breathing builds up strong concentration skills. While traditional languages are specific to various regions, music is arguably the number one universal language that can be communicated and understood (even if at a basic level) anywhere by anyone. Music is, in many instances, the best way to aurally paint a picture, set a mood, or express one's inner feelings. Not everyone is as outspoken or eloquent as others, and through the study of music, students are able to take their thoughts and ideas and translate them into sonic textures, harmonies, and melodies that are able to be shared in a variety of artistic and powerful ways.

For example, YourStory published a biography of a music teacher named Evandro Joao Silva who became a local hero in Brazil, using his music lessons to empower his students to overcome incredible obstacles in life.
The kids he taught lived in crime-ridden neighborhoods around Rio de Janeiro, and he showed them how to become more positive about their abilities through music. His group of students would raise money for local charities with their concerts to help sick children in poverty receive treatment for free. One of his students, Diego Frazao Torquato, got pneumonia and meningitis in the slums when he was only 4 years old, and these diseases impaired his memory and motor skills. However, Silva taught him to play violin anyway. It was a miracle for this boy when he could finally perform, and it gave him a hope about life that he'd never had before. When Silva died later, Diego and his other students were there to play incredible music at his funeral, testifying to the power that music has to change people.

Music As a Language
Music, one of the greatest expressive arts known to man, is known globally for its ability to communicate and express ideas including feelings and emotions that simply cannot be put into words. Many have called it the “universal language.” Is music really a language? The purpose of this article is to examine both the similarities and differences between the music language and conventional languages (which I will refer to as standard languages). It is not the point of this article to consider music as either an alternative to or equivalent of standard native languages, rather, the point is to illustrate how music unquestionably possesses definite, key linguistic characteristics.
There is little doubt, in my humble opinion, that music is certainly a type of language since it is comprised of all the essentials of standard languages. Consider the following statements:
Some people are born into the world possessing certain genetic abilities enabling them to do certain things with relative ease. One of these abilities is music. It is possible for a child to simply decide to sit at a piano and begin exploring, learning, and figuring it out. While the child will not immediately sit down and play a Mozart piano concerto, it is possible for the child to gradually develop his/her skills in the music language without having any music lessons. Even more common is the discovery of extremely young children singing remarkably well without any lessons. These so-called child prodigies have been genetically programmed to have this general ability of “understanding” how music works when they are born. No lessons are needed, as they possess the ability to figure the music language out on their own. The same is true for a child learning a standard native language. No matter where the child is born or raised, the child will (without formal teaching) learn (through trial and error) to speak the native language of his/her surrounding environment.
Somewhat ironically, this genetic ability to learn languages easily (without formal instruction) can also be a key difference between the two languages. This is because the “innate” ability to acquire the music language is not genetically programmed into everyone whereas the ability to learn some kind of standard native language is. In fact, not only is this specific gene (that of being able to learn the music language informally with no training) not present in everyone, but also the gene for basic musical talent is definitely not present in everyone. One more difference between the two languages is that while there is a cutoff age in the early teens after which it is considered to be nearly impossible for a person to completely master a standard language, this is not the case in the language of music. People of all ages have been known to learn music, and those that start learning music later in life are not at risk of being unable to completely master the musical language.
As in any other language, one must consciously learn to read, write, and become generally literate in the language of music. None are born already knowing how to properly notate (write down) a piece of music just as none are born with the ability to write a paper. These arts must be learned consciously through music lessons, differing greatly from the innate and somewhat unconscious process of learning to speak the languages.
No language is limited to or solely defined by its written form, especially since the written forms of languages obviously came only after the passing down of many years of oral traditions. Music, just the same, is certainly not limited to a life of mere notes on a page. The practice of music notation came only after people began to desire to find a way to share musical thoughts and ideas with one another so that they could “speak together.” Many people, as with many other languages, are illiterate and can make no sense of the written form of music. Some of these same people, however, are great musicians who “speak the language” quite well. There are a number of famous musicians today who don’t read the written form of music but are still well known and respected worldwide. The pianist/keyboardist, Yanni, is one example. Such is also the case in most standard languages; one doesn’t need to be literate in order to speak a standard native language.
Like other standard languages, music is also made up of phonemes, which can be defined as “the basic units in the sound systems of language.” The phonemes of music are obviously the notes. While there are only 12 pitches and 15 letters in the Western European music alphabet, there are technically an almost endless number of phonemes or sounds. This is because of octaves or registers in music. This means that a pitch such as a “C” can exist at several different frequencies which allow it to maintain its pitch classification as a “C” but also allows it to sound either higher or lower than other “C” pitches. The best way to think of this is to imagine a man and a woman singing a pitch such as a “C” together. Most likely, the woman will produce a higher frequency “C” than the man will, yet the man and the woman are both still singing “C’s.” The man’s “C” will most likely be a lower frequency “C” and will, therefore, sound lower (down an octave or so) from the woman’s “C.” Therefore, since there are so many different instruments with different octave capabilities, there are an endless number of phonemic possibilities.
Once the phonemes are recognized in music, it is then possible to string them together and create ideas. It could be argued that simple musical ideas may be called morphemes, but in the music language, it is probably necessary to think and hear the ideas in the context of a melody and phrases. That is, ideas in the music language can’t really have any meaning outside the context of a melody. Morphemes are too similar to specific words, which do not really exist in the language of music. This brings us to another important difference between standard languages and the music language. The music language lacks a definite vocabulary to produce the equivalent of words found in standard languages. It is for this reason that music cannot produce very specific or detailed ideas.
Allophones are produced when rhythmic variation comes into the picture. In music, a certain pitch may be held for a certain number of beats depending on the rhythmic notation. They allow the phonemes to sound slightly different just by altering how long or short the phoneme is held. Allophones also include articulations (the manner in which a note is played, sung, or attacked) in the music language. For example, a note on a violin could either be plucked or played with the bow. While the note being played remains the same, the sound produced is slightly different.
Almost everyone uses some type of tone or pitch as a part of communication in standard languages. For example, an excited person may have a certain lilt or rising and falling in his/her voice which is indicative of his/her mood. Just the same, a tired or boring person may have little or no tonal inflections when communicating. This would produce a monotonous sound indicating, once again, the mood of the speaker. The rising and falling of pitches in music is one of its most important characteristics. In the music language, pitch directions can be measured in intervals. Intervals are by definition, the distance between any two pitches and, essentially, the building blocks of musical melodies. Like standard speech, musical speech (melodies) also can attest to the mood of the situation. If there is written music being performed, the mood is that of the composer. If the music is simply being improvised, the mood portrayed is that of the performer.
Although, as mentioned earlier, the music language cannot produce very detailed or specific ideas, it certainly can produce rather complex and even elaborate ones. What, for example, would horror film fans do without the spooky music? This scary music is produced using the minor keys in the language. This can be demonstrated simply by listening to the difference between two chords (a set of two or more pitches played simultaneously). The first is a major chord, which consists of the notes: “C”, “E”, and “G.” This should be thought of as a “happy” or “non-scary” chord. The second chord is the minor or “scary” chord, which consists of the same three notes except the middle note is lowered one half step making it an “E flat.” The resulting sound is a much darker, depressing, and scarier one that is ideal for horror films.
Another frequent melodic occurrence in “scary” music is the tri-tone interval. This interval was, in the old days, known as “demonic” since it sounds quite odd and horrific at first to untrained ears. Specific notes producing this melody could be a “C” and “F sharp” or any two notes consisting of either an augmented fourth or diminished fifth intervallic relationship.
Conversations in music happen consistently as in standard languages. The most recognizable communication in the music language occurs in the jazz “dialect.” In the jazz musical setting, performers are constantly listening to each other and playing off of each other. For example, if the saxophone player plays something interesting, the drummer may compliment or respond to his/her “statement” with a rhythmic hit or motif. The piano player may respond to the bass player by playing back part of what he/she just played only slightly changing it. Jazz is probably the dialect of music that allows the most uninhibited form of conversation since the conversation is occurring live between all of the performers. The jazz performers are improvising statements (just like speaking a language). They are putting ideas together in ways that are both semantically feasible and fresh for the language of music.
In conclusion, music should not be considered as a replacement for standard native languages since they are able to convey specific ideas. Music should be recognized, however, as a unique and important type of language since it has many of the linguistic traits found in standard languages. Though the words of standard languages remain the number one choice for expressing specific details, music will always be that special, magical language which expresses the thoughts and ideas for which words would simply not do.

Melodic Motives & Development (Composition)
So what is it exactly that makes a composition a solid one? Besides having interesting ideas and a smooth progression, one of the most important things is the development of your ideas. It’s within the development of your initial ideas/motives that true unity within your composition can be achieved. It’s the purpose of this article to examine (in the traditional jazz “song style”) the mechanics of melodic motivic development.
To demonstrate some approaches to motivic development in composition, we’ll take a look below at a lead sheet of one of my pieces, “Spring Ahead.”
The basic form of the tune is A, A(1), B, A(1) meaning that it is set in four sections. The first A is 16 bars, the second A is almost exactly the same but has some variation and ends up as only 14 bars. The bridge is the B section (16 bars) and breaks away almost completely (as it should) from the initial motives…but not that much! Finally, there’s a return to the A(1) section and a coda.
TWe’ll begin, obviously, in the first “A” section and look at the 2 primary motives. IT IS UPON THESE MOTIVES WHICH THE MAJORITY OF THE COMPOSITION WILL BE BASED. Notice from measures 1-4, we have motive #1, and from (including pickups) measures 5-8, we have motive #2. Already within bar 6, I began to develop motive #2 by “augmenting” or “making longer” the rhythm from the pickups in measure 4. You’ll notice the same half step relationships between the eighth note pickups to measure 5 and the quarter note triplet in bar 6.
In bar 7, I used the same starting tone as in measure 5, the 9th, this time changing up the rhythm slightly but still keeping the general “character” of bar 5.
In measures 9-10, we see somewhat of a return to motive #1. Here I’m using the same rhythmic motive with the pitches altered. Through the maintenance of this same rhythm, though the pitches are different, a unity within the structure of the piece is achieved. The same holds true for measures 11-12…this area is based on a development/extension of motive #2. Bar #14 can be thought of (to an extent) as a development of motive #1, BUT it has the complete triad within it that distinguishes it quite a bit. It’s probably best to call this motive #3. Remember this motive for later…we will briefly abandon it here, but it will return!
Finally, bars 15-16 can be thought of either as a new motive entirely, or better yet, a “diminution” or “squashing together” of the “key” tones of motive #1…C, F, A.
Here we are now at the second “A” of the tune, “A(1).” You’ll notice right away that bars 17-23 are almost exactly identical to the first 8 bars of the first “A.” While some writers will make them exactly the same, and that’s perfectly fine as there are many great tunes that follow that protocol, I find it a bit more interesting to try and change the second “A” up just a little. Here you’ll notice that I’ve just modified the rhythms a bit. In bars 20 and 22, I simply subtracted notes leaving rests. When writing, don’t be afraid to subtract. Rests can be just as important as notes! In bar 25, you’ll probably notice a new motive, #4. In bars 26-30, we return to more of the “developed” motive #2 which we modulate to lead us into the bridge.
We are now at the “B” section or “bridge.” It’s time to experiment with some new ideas/motives. Though, do we really need to come up with many completely new ideas? While we want the bridge to sound fairly different than the “A” sections, it’s a good idea to first go back in the “A” sections and ensure that all of the motives there were fully utilized. If you recall, two of the motives in the “A” sections were only briefly stated. Those were motives #3 and #4. Therefore, with a little development, creation of one final motive, and a combination of all the aforementioned, we’ve essentially already written our bridge!
Motive #3 starts us out from bars 31-32. Notice the complete triad. We then add motive #5 in bars 32-33. In bar 35, I grabbed motive #4 and then combined it with motive #2 and the “diminished” motive #1! So, while this isn’t completely new material, it’s varied quite a bit to produce a different section, and there’s definitely a great deal “tying” it all together.
At bar 39, you can clearly see that we’re back to motive #4 and then add motive #3 in bar 40 and finally add a developed motive #5 in bars 41-43. For something completely different in bars 43-46, I added several rhythmic kicks to get us back to the final “(A1).”
Finally, the Coda takes us back to an even further developed (harmonically) motive #2.

As you can see, motivic development is a key to composing in the jazz “song style” format. It’s not enough to have good ideas…you must develop them, combine them, and really use them to the fullest extent (without, of course, going overboard and becoming minimalistic)!

20 Tips and Tricks to keep YOUR Stringed Instrument in Tip Top Shape

Keep violin an bow in case when not in use.
Always loosen your bow before placing it in the case.
Rosin your bow only when needed…not every play.
Aways wipe rosin from bow, violin, and strings after each play.
Keep bridge at 90 degrees to the top plate. Keep it square with fingerboard.
Check bridge for alignment with fingerboard and FF hole notches each day.
If post falls down, loosen strings immediately.
If fingerboard comes unglued, loosen strings immediately.
Handle the violin only by the neck or chin rest area.
Change strings approximately every six months (depending on amount of play time).
Get the bow rehaired every six months for optimal performance (depending on amount of play time).
Learn to use the Pegs (and don’t rely entirely on the fine tuners)
Remember, your instrument is only comfortable where you are! (Are you comfortable in a car trunk?) Environmental care will prevent post cracks!
Handling by anyone other than the player does most damage to the violin, viola, or cello!
Don’t monkey with another’s fiddle!
Accidental Damage: Most always caused by careless handling or rough-housing. One drop on concrete can TOTALLY DESTROY A VIOLIN.
NEVER ….NEVER USE THE BOW AS A WALKING STICK OR SWORD!…HOLD THE TIP UP OR AS INSTRUCTED!
LOVE your violin and it will repay you many times over in pleasure. RESPECT your instrument and be respectful of those next to you.
